About Universiteit Hasselt
At Hasselt University, solid academic research is the foundation of good academic education and is an important link in the innovation chain. Hasselt University has chosen to concentrate a large proportion of its research resources in a number of research institutes. The institutes aim to cover the entire research spectrum, from fundamental research via strategic basic research to the building of concrete applications. Innovative research and the valorisation of it are therefore important components of the university’s research policy.
The expertise of two Hasselt University research institutes is relevant for the aerospace domain. The Expertise Centre for Digital Media (EDM) is the ICT research institute of Hasselt University and core lab of Flanders Make. EDM performs research in computer science since 1987 and focuses in its research on three core competences: ‘Visual Computing’, ‘Networked and Secure Systems’ and ‘Human-Computer Interaction’. Across the different core competences of EDM, its research expertise fits well within different application areas including but not limited to: manufacturing, media and entertainment, social and cultural sector, e-health, telecommunications, edutainment and tourism.
The Institute for Materials Research is focused on Materials development and research in an interdisciplinary way, in combination with processing and analyzing of existing and newly developed materials. Its drivers/areas from sustainability point of view are: Energy (renewable Energy “PV” and Energy Storage “Batteries”); Sensor Technology (“Health”, “Industry 4.0”, “AgroFood”) and Sustainable Materials. It therefore comprises a broad range of expertise along the full chain of research. It holds 30 research groups, 140 researchers and has many collaborations ongoing (imec, Solliance, EnergyVille).
